More specifically, it refers to being able to enjoy the costly cuts of meat found on the higher parts of the hog, such as pork chops and ham, while poorer relations have to fill up on vegetables and beans perhaps seasoned with a bit of bacon. But in a rich man, poor man twist of fate, it turns out that living high on the hog is not the best way to live a long life. Nutrition researchers conclude it's actually healthier to eat more like a peasant than a king. "The foods considered low on the food chain — such as vegetables and whole grains — are clearly better for our health than big steaks and white bread, which historically was considered more upscale than brown bread." Now, we know it's important for our long-term health to eat more greens and grains.

Advice from Oprah's trainer

Greene, who also is an exercise physiologist, targets three areas -- fitness, diet and the emotional side of weight gain. Fifty-one percent of the 147 million adults who use the Internet look for nutrition information, according to the Pew Internet and American Life Project. Nutrition seekers tend to be women, college-educated and have six or more years of using the Internet. The Pew survey calls these people "power users" who are motivated to find information that relates to actions they might need for specific medical issues in their lives and those of their family and friends. As you make your New Year's resolution to eat more healthfully, consider some free nutrition advice provided on reputable websites. I stress the word reputable because nutrition quackery thrives on the Internet. So many people look at nutrition labels because their doctors told them they need to watch their diet to lower their cholesterol but many people are misinformed and looking at the wrong information. You are not the only one and it is not your fault because your doctor believe, it or not, may knows nothing on nutrition. If you have high cholesterol then start looking at your food labels. You need to decreases the amount of saturated fat you are eating. Don't worry that shrimp is high in cholesterol because it is low in saturated fat. I know it is a very mind boggling concept to grasp but eating saturated fat increases your blood cholesterol. Eating cholesterol does not affect blood cholesterol nearly as much as saturated fat. Okay so you now know the truth, watch out for those saturated fat but what has saturated fat? Saturated fat is the most wicked fat because your body has the most difficulty breaking it down and that is when it begins to collect in your arteries eventually clogging them.

No fail, no gain: Nutrition guru promises you will lose weight in ...

Calgary -- Leslie Beck makes big promises. In her new book, The No-Fail Diet (Penguin Canada, 2006, $28), Canada's nutrition guru has mapped out a plan that guarantees a new you. If you follow her 12-week plan, you will lose weight. Period. "If you are willing, motivated and ready to make some permanent changes, this will work," says Beck, 42, while in Calgary on a book tour. "This will absolutely work." The new book, her seventh, is the accumulation of Beck's 18 years in practice as a registered dietitian, she says. It's all the research, her own experience, her clients' experiences and everything else she's learned and lived her entire life. She follows her own eating plan and also works out five times a week, doing cardio and strength-building exercises and running outside with a friend one night a week.

Nutrition an important key for young athletes

Q: I am in my 40s and I can feel the effect of diet on my body, but for my daughter and son, who are high school athletes, how important really is nutrition at their age in relation to athletic performance? I mean at their age, does it really make a huge difference? A: Definitely yes, nutrition is one of the most important keys to your young athlete's success. Proper nutrition is vital for providing proper fuel to their body allowing them to sustain the rigors of training and competition. Q: My son has aspirations to run for his high school track team and does not have access to an indoor track. You're not alone. I regularly hear from readers who need advice tailored to their particular needs.Finding a qualified nutritionist when you need reliable dietary guidance can be critical to your health. That's why it's important to know who is qualified to give you dietary advice and how you can best use their services. In North Carolina, the most reliable source of nutrition information is a licensed, registered dietitian. Registered dietitians have at minimum a four-year degree from a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education. They complete a qualifying practical experience, pass a national exam and maintain an ongoing program of continuing education in the field. Many have completed graduate degrees as well.North Carolina's Dietetics Practice Act requires that anyone dispensing nutrition advice be licensed by the state, though supersized loopholes permit many others without the equivalent -- or possibly any -- nutrition education to practice as well, including chiropractors, dental hygienists, psychologists, massage therapists -- even funeral home directors. That's why it's important to be sure your diet coach has an RD after his or her name.Where can you find a licensed, registered dietitian? Start by checking the phone book or asking your doctor for a referral.

New shipboard menu offers more nutrition, less fat

Every seagoing sailor and skipper knows that a crews morale is inextricably linked to shipboard food. The Navy in October introduced a new and standardized menu designed to inject more health into every meal served on ships across the globe. Officials want to set a new course for a healthier fleet with a menu that incorporates some favorite foods and tried-and- true recipes but that also offers more foods that are lighter on fats and calories and dense in nutrients. With the standardized menu, every ship in the fleet will serve the same basic meals that are healthier than whats offered now.

ADULT NUTRITION

This concept is the most consistent health message in dietary recommendations around the world. We need more than 40 different nutrients for good health and no single food can supply them all. That's why consumption of a wide variety of foods (including fruits, vegetables, cereals and grains, meats, fish and poultry, dairy products and fats and oils), is necessary for good health and any food can be enjoyed as part of a healthy diet. Some studies have linked dietary variety with longevity. Get set. Gobble: Time to let out the belt a notch and hide the bathroom scale. Eating season is in high gear. With all the time and pleasure spent talking about, preparing and consuming food, you'd think we'd be experts on how it affects our health. But, when it comes to nutrition, most of us have a lot to learn. "So many people believe nutrition myths, things we've heard from grandma or popularized in the media. And, it's completely understandable because everyone can relate to food. Everyone eats. We all have our own little food experiences," says Cheryl Rock, professor of nutrition at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine. "Because so many myths are constantly reinforced through television or other media, it can be hard to separate belief systems from the science of nutrition." However, for our health's sake, we need to try.

Cartoon Seeks To Educate On Food Nutrition

(AP) WASHINGTON Labelman has joined the pantheon of cartoon characters the government is using to promote healthier eating habits. The red cartoon figure with a nutrition label body was unveiled Tuesday by health officials as part of their latest effort at solving obesity in the United States. Labelman guides consumers through a new Web-based program, Make Your Calories Count, which the Department of Health and Human Services and the Food and Drug Administration announced along with a brochure on how to use nutrition labels. The program is aimed at showing consumers how to plan a healthy diet and manage calories. And, with a little help from Labelman, its online exercises explain serving sizes and daily nutrient value of the package contents. The survey, which reveals that 95% of EU citizens agree that obesity is harmful for health, addresses the health and physical characteristics of Europeans, their diet and general eating habits, problems related to being overweight, and their physical activity levels. Eating more vegetables and less fat are the most frequent changes that Europeans say they are introducing in their eating habits. However, most respondents report feeling trapped in a sedentary life that restricts their attempts to lead a healthy lifestyle. Less than 30% of Europeans carry out “intensive" physical activity on a regular basis.

Keep employees healthy by encouraging proper fitness, diet

Some companies attempt to combat illness-related absences through health programs that encourage employees to maintain proper fitness, diet and hygiene. It's the old "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" approach. Quite often organizations will either deliver health maintenance programs separately or as part of a wellness or employee assistance program. Such programs can include: Informing employees of daily nutritional requirements and exercise needs; Period check-ups and screenings by a medical team onsite; Encouraging employees to undertake physical fitness regimens; Providing exercise facilities, a track or even a locker room with basketball court that can be used by employees before or after work, or during lunch breaks; Organizing a sports league that will allow for employee competition and improve camaraderie among employees; and Offering incentives and programs for smokers to quit.

GUEST COLUMN / HEALTH & NUTRITION

When I run into people who have read my Postbag letters on vegetarianism, I generally get favourable responses. But occasionally someone will say something like: "What gives you the right to tell me to become a vegetarian?" But if KFC, for example, has the right to intrude into my bedroom via my television set and tell me to eat their food, don't I have the right to write newspaper letters questioning the ethics of how KFC chickens are raised? Don't "little people" like myself have the same rights as a big corporate power such as KFC? But putting aside the ethical questions, what about the health issue? Why is it that the public generally applauds those who promote safe sex, safe driving and abstinence from smoking, but as soon as someone promotes vegetarianism, he is immediately accused of imposing his view on the public? While a laudable first step, these policies are analogous to an architect's rendering of a new house: No matter how good the plan looks on paper, translating the vision into reality requires lots of hard work. The federal wellness policy mandate places responsibility on each school district participating in the national school lunch and breakfast programs to adopt guidelines for all foods sold during the school day. They also must set goals for improving nutrition education and physical activity as each district deems appropriate. In California, nearly 3.1 million primary and secondary students are enrolled in free or reduced-price meal programs.

(Real) nutrition facts

LAWRENCE, Kan. - It's hard to tell what's actually healthy for you to eat these days. As soon as there is evidence of something having health benefits, the media grabs hold of it and spins it out of control. After researchers found that diets rich in whole grains reduced incidence of heart disease, diabetes, obesity and some forms of cancer, every food company came out with "whole grain" foods. There are now whole grain cookies, Goldfish, chips, cereals and more. This all sounds great, but how healthy can they be? If you take a closer look, the fine print often says, "made with whole grain," or "contains whole grain," instead of being a 100 percent whole-grain product. Some food manufacturers even color their food to make it look whole grain when it's not.

Towards a European Strategy on nutrition a healthy diets

Your theme of "Food for life – meeting consumers' needs" is highly topical – and a central concern for the society and a real challenge for the food industry. I congratulate the CIAA on the consumer orientated nature of its congress programme. This certainly strikes the right note in a timely manner. We knew for long that a number of serious health conditions are directly linked to poor diet, or lack of physical activity. Moreover, obesity is now universally recognised as a multi-faceted problem – one which has been on the increase over the past three decades. It is important to assess and consider the impacts that obesity can exert on health at both individual and societal level. Obesity increases the risk of a number of severe medical conditions – including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some forms of cancer.

The Lean Plate Club Nutrition advice on Web often spotty, study ...

Tens of millions of consumers seek nutrition advice online, regularly searching for information about dietary supplements, food allergies and how to lose weight. But a new evaluation of the 20 most popular diet and nutrition Internet sites by Consumer Reports WebWatch shows that the information they dish out can be slim on facts and sometimes bloated with commercial interests. "More than half the top 20 sites were not rated well by our panel," says Beau Brendler, director of Consumer Reports WebWatch. "That is of some concern." To evaluate the sites, Consumer Reports WebWatch, sponsored by the Pew Charitable Trusts and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, teamed with the nonprofit Health Improvement Institute. Using Nielsen/NetRatings, they identified the 20 most popular diet and nutrition Web sites, including WebMD.com, with 11 million unique users.

Pediatrics prof talks nutrition

Melvin Heyman, professor of pediatrics at the University of California at San Francisco, recently took questions online on child nutrition and lactose intolerance. Excerpts from the discussion follow: Q: I've noticed that many of the parents in my child's play group are giving their children reduced-fat or fat-free dairy products and snacks made with sugar alternatives (Splenda, Nutrasweet, etc.) so their children won't get fat. This makes me cringe, as the kids are 2 and 3 years old. Your thoughts, please. A: I share your concern. I do not support use of sugar alternatives for most children, especially for young children in play groups or day care. While there is no evidence that I am aware of for harm here, there also is no real benefit of avoiding a regular diet and regulating the intake of healthy foods.

Nutrition's small gains in elementary schools

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Angela Swift found it surprising that daughter Alexandria would ask to stock the family fridge with healthy whole-wheat tortillas, fruit and turkey burgers. But what are the "right things"? What does your body need in order to help you stay active? One important answer is glucose. Glucose is the fuel your body needs, especially at the beginning of exercise. Even after you've been exercising for a while and your muscles are getting energy from fat, glucose is still important. It's like gasoline for your body - so keep your gas tank full. Where do you get glucose? You get it from carbohydrates. Maintain a well-balanced diet and choose lots of fruit and vegetables to go with your grains (pasta, rice, bread, cereal). And remember to eat the right things at the right times - food takes time to digest. Using standardized and validated tests for literacy (REALM -Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Medicine) and numeracy (WRAT3 - Wide Range Achievement Test), researchers from Vanderbilt University Medical Center surveyed 200 primary care patients from a wide socioeconomic range. A Nutrition Label Survey (NLS), designed with input from registered dietitians, primary care providers, and experts in health literacy/numeracy to evaluate patient understanding of current nutrition labels, was used to measure comprehension of current food nutrition labels.

Anti-ageing through 'super nutrition'

Nutrition and avoiding a sedentary lifestyle are keys to building a strong body, looking good and living a long life. MANVEET KAUR writes. A GOOD nutritional plan is often the last thing people consider when starting their fight against ageing. Often they look to expensive anti-ageing creams and other more serious treatments like botox. But there are volumes of research in the anti-ageing arena that says if you really want to fight the natural ageing process, you should seriously consider the science of anti-ageing nutrition. Dr Robert I-San Lin, an expert on nutrition in health-promotion, disease-prevention, and anti-ageing, says that nutrition is the key to building a strong body, looking good and living a long life. Here are the definitions of a few common terms to guide you along the highway to health. Daily Values (DVs): You can find the DVs on the Nutrition Facts panel of a food label. They are intended to be a quick reference for the consumer to determine how much of a particular nutrient is included relative to what the Food and Drug Administration has determined to be the average needs of the typical consumer for a single serving size, for example, a Daily Value of 10 percent for fat means one serving provides 10 percent of the daily requirement of fat for that day. So, for example, if the recommended daily intake of sodium is 2,400 milligrams, and a serving of cereal provides 240 milligrams of sodium, the cereal's DV for sodium would be 10 percent.

Nutrition Notes: Poverty: Can We Change Its Impact on Cancer Risk?

By Karen Collins, MS, RD, CDN - We often hear about how lack of access to recommended cancer screening can delay diagnosis and treatment of cancer among our nation's poor, worsening likely outcomes. By employing a common-sense, scientifically sound approach to nutrition and hydration, you can ensure effective training and perform at your best all year long... By Jeb Stewart MS, CSCS, PES Introduction One of the most perplexing and misunderstood aspects of sports training is that of nutrition. This should not come as a surprise as it is a subject that encompasses so many areas and plays such a critical part of the performance paradigm. Unfortunately, there is no one size fits all approach (at least not one that works) and no magic bullet. Too many people are constantly looking for the one nugget of information or approach to nutrition to solve all of the problems and answer all of their questions.

Ask the Health Coach: Osteoporosis can be managed with nutrition

For all of the faithful readers of these monthly discussions of various health concerns, you are probably all wondering if there is a nutritional approach to most health concerns ... the answer to your question is an unequivocal yes! The rating system is in 150 of its stores in upstate New York and New England. .

Workshop pushes for nutrition literacy

Chennai : The Department of Women and Child Development's Community Food and Nutrition Extension Unit of the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development organised a workshop on Wednesday, as part of the National Nutrition Week celebrations. Delegates at the meet, led by P. Sivasankaran, Project Co-ordinator, Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS), called for awareness on nutrition literacy, which was a continuous process. People need to avoid junk foods in favour of traditional dietary habits, they stressed. S. Muthiah, Joint-Coordinator, Communication and Training, ICDS, said there was ignorance even among the literate people about nutrition. Success The success of the nutrition programme depended on people's realisation of the objectives and acceptance of the message of nutrition.

Weight loss, diet, nutrition, and food news and information

In one of this site's recent "Nibbles" entries, note was made of a study in the September issue of Pediatrics that effectively put the lie to a misguided assumption about overweight toddlers: that their extra heft is merely normal "baby fat," which will magically ebb or diminish or somehow be absorbed as the child grows older. In fact, according to research conducted by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, "baby fat" as a rule becomes "child fat" and then "adolescent fat" before finally settling in as "adult fat." Previous studies had already shown that teen weight is a reliable predictor of adult weight; the new figures show that the "predictor" principle begins as early as age two. Children overweight at that age are five times more likely to be overweight at age 12, and of those who are overweight at any time prior to beginning grade school, 60 percent will be unhealthily heavy by that age.

Hannaford launches nutrition labeling program

Shoppers at Hannaford Bros. Co. supermarkets who aren't sure whether the foods they're buying are nutritious can now look to the stars. The Maine chain of 158 stores announced Wednesday it has created a system that ranks the nutritional content of all the food on its shelves, calling it the first of its kind in the supermarket industry. The rankings, which range from one star (good nutritional value) to three stars (best nutritional value) are printed on the shelf price tags. .
